First Generation
I am the first in my family to go to college, so adjusting and knowing what to expect is a little more challenging for me. At first I knew that I wanted to attend college but I didn’t have anyone to tell me what to do or how to do it. When I was in high school I joined an organization that helped me with all the things that I needed to do in order to get accepted to college. My mentors helped me edit my essays, apply for financial aid and scholarships, and build my own resume. I had the support of my parents and with the help of the organization I applied and got accepted to six universities.
Since I am the first one to go to college in my family, if I
have a questions I usually have to figure out myself or ask friends or people
who have had experienced with college. I had trouble understanding how financial
aid or scholarships worked and how I would pay for college because I knew that
my parents were not going to be able to pay for it. I also didn’t know exactly what to expect in
college and how I should study for my exams.
I am now done with the first two weeks of college and so far
it has been okay although I am feeling pressure because I am getting a little behind in
some of my readings and I don’t know if I will be ready for my exams. I feel
that the lectures are not bad but I won’t know for sure until I take my first
exams and see how I do, hopefully the way I am reading and taking notes will
help me pass my first exams and all the upcoming ones that will help me pass
all my classes and reach my goal.
