So I thought I would start off this whole little blog with telling you all a little about myself, and how I got to Texas State. My name is Nemira Brown-Jenkins (“Knee-mirrA”) and I’m a military brat. I don’t really have a hometown but I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. I have lived in about 7 different states and I would have to say that Florida was the best state I ever lived in…sorry Texas. I have two little brothers, but honestly I’m the baby since I’m the only girl. I also have two best friends my mom being one and my good friend Cynthia…she attends University of Texas San Antonio. You will definitely hear a lot about her! So in high school I can tell you that I did just enough to get by. In my tenth grade year I stepped out of my element and I tried out to become a majorette of the Baby Ocean of Soul band! Goodness was I excited but nervous at the same time. I honestly have to say that I consider making the team one of my biggest accomplishments. Eleventh grade came around I was a dancer, on the track team, and in my first relationship. Nothing could get any better, but with my mentality of just getting by, all the extra factors really weighed heavily in my performance in school. I was then pulled out of all extracurricular activities, the school, and my relationship. Once turning over a new leaf I got an internship with Walter P. Moore and engineering company and getting paid big bucks, and I was just senior! I could not have done this all by myself but with the help of Genesys Works, I got the internship, scholarships, and accepted into 6 different colleges. The decision was hard but after talking to teachers who attended Texas State and visiting the campus. I made the best decision in my life, and I can’t wait for what’s to come.

Now I’m in my second week of school and there is so much to take in. The pressure is getting a little harder but I know I can take it. My motivation is just looking at what I have already accomplished and that more work is here to come. Although I am excited to be here there are a lot of things that don’t necessarily keep me from achieving my goals, but they are huge factors in my life that sometimes play a role in how I may feel a certain day. Hopefully throughout the semester I can talk about it. I just want to make it very clear that my life isn’t all unicorns, gummy bears, and cute little dragons.

Best specimen in the world,

Nemira B.
