Today would have been just any
other day when I woke up, but it wasn’t. I was awaken by tweets and facebook
status giving remembrance to the fallen soldiers, policemen, and fireman. Some
talked about how brave those were who gave their lives, others said that they
were the definition of what a true hero is. Now don’t get me wrong what they
were saying was both remarkable and kind but it didn’t hit me hard or take it
to the heart. I pondered over this all day I couldn’t put my finger on why. Now
when I got home today I didn’t have too much homework so I was able to watch
some of the reruns of Sportscenter, I was lucky enough to catch one of the
storylines they were showing since today was 9/11. It was a young man who as a
teenager would spend time as a volunteer at the fire station. To get to the
point of the story the young man was working in the south tower on September
11, 2001 and when the second plane hit, chaos erupted but it moment of terror
he took charge and guided everyone to the down the stairs from the 78th
floor to the 46th floor where they met up with firefighters. Although
instead of going down with the survivors and fireman he did the unthinkable, he
went back up to the 78th floor to rescue more people that were
stranded and wounded. And like before he went up and brought them back to down
to the care of fireman. Unfortunately he went up a third time but did not
return for that the south tower had finally fallen. This story him me hard, it
even make me tear up but it really showed me why this sad day is important to
our country. It shows that even in the wake of our most tragic moment we have
people that who shine and rise up to do what is right even if it means risking
it all.
